Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is a nutritional problem commonly found among adolescents and may negatively affect growth, health, and future productivity. One of the preventive efforts is nutrition counseling using engaging and age-appropriate educational media, such as powerpoint presentations and motion graphic videos. To analyze the effectiveness of nutrition counseling through powerpoint and motion graphic video media in improving nutritional knowledge regarding the prevention of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among adolescents at SMPN 1 Tapin Tengah. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 46 ninth-grade students of SMPN 1 Tapin Tengah, who were divided into two groups: the powerpoint group and the motion graphic video group. Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests. The mean knowledge score in the powerpoint group increased from 58.91 to 75.00, while the mean score in the motion graphic video group increased from 58.91 to 83.26. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant improvement in nutritional knowledge in both groups (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the Mann–Whitney test showed a significant difference in effectiveness between the powerpoint and motion graphic video media in improving adolescents’ nutritional knowledge (p = 0.005). Nutrition counseling using both powerpoint and motion graphic video media was effective in improving adolescents’ nutritional knowledge regarding CED prevention. However, motion graphic video media proved to be more effective than powerpoint media and is therefore recommended as a nutrition education medium for adolescents.
